Jacob Mwathi Mati is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP), University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is also an Associate Research Fellow at University of Pretoria’s Centre for the study of Governance Innovations (GovInn). Jacob holds a PhD (Sociology) and MA (Development Studies) from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), and a BA (Hons) (Political Science and Economics) from Moi University (Kenya). Jacob has researched and published on a wide range of subjects including social movements, civil society, volunteerism and governance. He is currently finalising a book manuscript on Protest movements and contemporary political order in Kenya. Jacob blends professional experiences from the academy, civil society and consulting worlds having worked as a researcher for the CIVICUS based Civil Society Index and a couple of other civil society organisations in Kenya and India. He has also been engaged as a consultant in among other projects, the USAID Civil Society Sustainability Index and the UNV State of the World’s Volunteering report. He also serves on several boards.
