Summary: Resilient Urban Communities Johannesburg Convening

The Resilient Urban Communities (RUC) project exemplifies how collaboration can enable comprehensive and thoughtful research for development efforts. Recently, our Centre hosted the project’s convening in Johannesburg, South Africa, where we were joined by researchers, PhD students, social development practitioners, and other stakeholders.

The theme of this convening was “Social enterprises and non-profits as subsidiary social service providers and vehicles for participation and integration that contribute to the resilience of urban communities”. Delegates participated in an interactive programme which included panel discussions and dialogues hosted at Wits Business School, with keynote addresses from Frank Askwani of the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) and Saliem Fakir of The African Climate Foundation. Delegates also visited social entrepreneurs based in Soweto township, Eikenhof Food Garden and Book Ibhoni Social Enterprise, and heard first-hand from 2 of the winners of the AspireHigher competition, who have continued to implement social transformation projects targetted at young girls in the community of Tsakane; Imbokodo Launchpad and Gratitude Project.

Reflecting on the milestones to date and outcomes from the convening, the project’s partners reaffirmed their commitment to their mandate which has been demonstrated through dedication to conducting research and disseminating knowledge.
