Disaster Management Report
On the 19th of July 2019, Capsi in partnership with the Mandela Institute for Developmental Studies and the Graca Machel Trust, hosted a dialogue on Disaster Management on the aftermath.
The frequency and magnitude of climate related disasters is expected to increase in our region which triggers massive concerns due to the sheer vulnerability of people and infrastructures on the front-lines of the disaster paths. In March and April 2019, Southern Africa was hit by level 4 cyclones Idai and Kenneth respectively, exposing the gaps in preparation, co-ordination and response. What can we learn from these disasters? How could we help people help themselves by reducing vulnerability? How can we be better prepared for the next disaster which is inevitable? These questions and more were discussed at this first stakeholder dialogue hosted by the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment at the University of the Witwatersrand.
